Here's one to add to your "incredibly random covers" playlist.
The other day Chicago mash-up masters The Hood Internet took part in the A.V. Club's "Undercover 2012" cover song performance series and chose to take on the 1982 classic "Back on the Chain Gang" by The Pretenders. As you might expect, the result is quite different from the original by Chrissie Hynde and company. The Pretenders are one of my all-time favorite bands so in my mind nothing can rival their version, but I have to applaud THI for coming up with a unique approach for it that actually works pretty well; they replace the original's jangly punchiness with a droning, spacey atmosphere (which is matched by some droning, spacey vocals courtesy of guest vocalists from Coins).
